How do I use AI effectively?

Be critical

AI tools are not without flaws.  Output from an AI tool may include made up quotes and false references to non-existent journal articles.

Stay aware to the fact that responses received from AI tools will not always be accurate. Seemingly plausible responses will often be of poor quality, be out of date, biased and in some cases just plain wrong. They may generate falsified information and out of date information, making them unreliable study tools.

Always take steps to verify what an AI tool has produced. Check facts, and run author/title searches on Library Search for any references produced by an AI tool.

Ask the right questions

Think carefully about the prompts and questions you  use in any AI tool, that way you are more likely to get a useful response in return.

For example, instead of asking "what is children's literature?", you could ask "give examples of children's literature written by a diverse range of authors from the 21st century".

Protect your privacy

We're still not sure how secure or private AI tools are so be careful not to include any personal or confidential information in the questions or prompts that you use.
