The read online option opens the ebook in the VLE reader.
You can search within the content of the ebook by clicking or selecting the magnifying glass icon in the left-hand side column and typing in keywords. The results will appear in a list below the search box.
VLeBooks supports keyboard shortcut navigation. The accessibility statement contains a list of commands.
VLeBooks have over 20 levels of magnification using the built-in zoom function. Click or select the magnifying glass icon with a plus sign in the lens in the top menu bar. The font size is dependent on device but typically a reading font size of up to 36 is achievable.
Content provided in PDF format will not reflow. Content provided in EPUB format does reflow. The online reader is HTML5 compliant, allowing for reflow on mobile devices.
JAWS and NVDA are not compatible with the online reader. You will need to download the ebook to Adobe Digital Editions to enable this software to perform.
The online reader has an in-built text-to-speech function which can be used from both desktop and mobile views. Click on or select the speaker icon in the top-right hand corner of the screen.
The provision of alt-text and image descriptions is the responsibility of the publisher and the VLebooks platform supports screen readers in accessing this information when provided by the publisher.
Access the colour palatte and other accessibility settings in the top right-hand corner of the screen (the strikethrough eye icon). This will open a pop-up panel where you can select a reading background from one of seven different dyslexia-friendly colours. You can also select High Contrast Mode.
Click on or select the Settings cog wheel icon in the top-right hand corner of the screen to change the font style and the line, character and word spacing.
You can download the whole ebook in PDF format or scroll down to the table of contents and download individual chapters. To read ebooks on your device you need to download Adobe Digital Editions. Ebooks can be downloaded for a limited amount of time, after which the file deletes itself. Downloading is disabled on high-use titles if it would prevent other users accessing the ebook.
Each VLeBook has its own print and copy allowance which is set by the publisher. These typically range between 10% and 50% of the total page count of the book.
VLeBooks are working towards being able to offer both EPUB and PDF formats for both online reading and download.
