LTU is committed to embracing cutting-edge digital technologies to provide all students with a high-quality learning experience, which prepares them for success after graduation. As such, we recognise the transformative opportunities of GenAI in personalising learning, improving accessibility, and boosting productivity. To make the most of these opportunities, we will invest in the development of AI literacy skills for everyone to understand how to use these tools responsibly and effectively.
At the same time, we acknowledge concerns about misuse. GenAI can be used in ways that – among other things – undermine academic integrity, but a relationship of trust between staff and students is central to our university’s community. We therefore expect all students to submit work that represents their own ideas and effort. Rather than banning the use of these tools outright – which would be impractical and out of step with how society and workplaces are already embracing them – we will provide clear guidance on their responsible use in modules and assessments. This will enable students to engage with Gen AI confidently and thoughtfully.
Our focus will always remain on good learning, teaching and assessment practices. By working in partnership with students, we aim to foster originality, critical thinking, and reflection – skills that GenAI cannot easily replicate, but are central to our students’ academic and professional futures. Through our values of innovation and social justice, we are dedicated to shaping conversations about using GenAI responsibly in higher education.
Should students feel unsure about how to use GenAI responsibly within a particular assignment, they should contact their module tutor. General advice and support can be provided by their module tutor, personal tutor, the Learning Hub, or the Library and Information Services, including assistance with using GenAI responsibly in academic research, writing, and referencing.
